St Pat’s in top half after narrow win over Longford

Shamrock Rovers ease past 10-man Wexford with three goals in Tallaght on Monday night

Longford Town 0 St Patrick's 1

Substitute Mark Timlin continued the revival of St Patrick’s with a decisive free kick. Unbeaten in four games now, Liam Buckley’s Dubliners move back up into the top half of the table.

The result was harsh on bottom side Longford who had the better of the first half, finally bringing the game to life on 33 minutes.

Goalkeeper Paul Skinner’s free kick was flicked on by Eddie Dsane for Kaleem Simon, whose volley came back off the far post.

St Patrick’s threatened before the interval, with Stephen Kinsella just failing to meet an inviting Conan Byrne cross at the back post.

Timlin won it on 73 minutes when the Donegal native curled the ball up and over the defensive wall to the net.

Shamrock Rovers 3 Wexford Youths 1

Shamrock Rovers came from behind to breeze past 10-man Wexford Youths.

David O’Connor’s rash challenge on Paul Murphy inside the box on 20 minutes left referee Adriano Reale with an easy decision and Danny Furlong converted the penalty.

Rovers recovered on 36 minutes through Gary McCabe. His pinpoint free-kick from 20 yards curled into the top-right corner of the net.

Three minutes later, the game turned as Brandon Miele crowned a flowing move by scoring with a 25-yard shot.

Rovers continued to dominate after the break, with Boyd heading in the third 20 minutes from the end. A miserable night for the visitors was compounded by losing Gary Delaney for a second booking eight minutes later.
